Hanako Hirose
Japanese national freediving representative, underwater model
Japanese national freediving representative, underwater model.
From early childhood, she played with dolphins around Mikurajima, where her grandparents lived, and naturally learned how to move gracefully in the water. Drawn to the depths, she eventually began competitive freediving.
While working as a diving instructor, she continued competing in domestic and international competitions. At the AIDA World Championship held in Okinawa in 2010, she achieved Japan’s first-ever overall team victory. She competed as a member of the Japanese national team for three consecutive tournaments, contributing to multiple world titles.
In 2017, at an international competition in the Bahamas, she succeeded in a 100-meter constant weight (CWT) dive, becoming the second woman in history to surpass 100 meters in that discipline. On the following day of competition, she reached 103 meters, setting both a new Asian record and a new Japanese record, and achieving her first world record.
The following year, at “Vertical Blue 2018,” she achieved a dive to 106 meters, establishing a new world record. Unfortunately, the world record was surpassed the next day by a rival Italian athlete with a 107-meter dive.
She is certified as a PADI Master Freediver Instructor and AIDA Freediving Instructor.
In addition to competing, she works as a freediving instructor, runs a freediving school, and works as an underwater model—journeying to seas around the world.
