Joi Ito

President of the Chiba Institute of Technology Former Director of MIT Media Lab

Ito is the President of the Chiba Institute of Technology, an academic institution in Japan that fosters interdisciplinary research and education in engineering, science, and social sciences. He holds a PhD in Media and Governance from Keio University.

With over 30 years of experience in various leadership, advisory, and entrepreneurial roles, he has been at the forefront of innovation and transformation in web3, blockchain, AI, health, media, and social impact. He is passionate about creating and supporting initiatives that harness the power of technology to solve global challenges and improve human well-being.

Ito is also the Co-Founder of Digital Garage and the Neurodiversity School in Tokyo.

He served as Director of the MIT Media Lab from 2011 to 2019 and was previously the Chief Executive of Creative Commons. He has also been a Board Member at The New York Times, Sony, the Knight Foundation, the MacArthur Foundation, ICANN, and The Mozilla Foundation.
